DEALING WITH THE HORRIFIC MOVIE THEATRE SHOOTING
July 20th, 2012
It is difficult for everyone to deal with this horrible killing spree that happened early this morning in the Aurora 16 movie theatre. Young children may hear the news on radio or TV or when adults and teens are talking. Children need to be reassured that they are safe. You cay say “The bad man has been caught by police and is in jail.” Secondly, children need to know that Mom and Dad will protect them. There are people in this world who are evil and very bad but there are many, many, many people around us who help to keep children safe. People like parents, grandparents, relatives, friends, teachers, police and many others want to do all they can to protect children.
When dealing with children’s questions honesty is the best policy but keep things at a level of understanding appropriate for each child. You can tell them that some people were hurt and some have died or “gone to heaven” but the shooting from this man is over. If your child exhibits signs of withdrawal, excessive crying or moodiness from this event then counseling can be a great help. Certainly we can examine your child in our office if necessary. Talk with your children. Answer their questions. Reassure them that they are safe and let them know you love them.
